A Renaissance Education

Renaissance Education

City River is built on the idea that high school should expand what a student is capable of, not narrow it. Academics, arts, movement, and language all carry equal weight.

Inquiry, Innovation & Discovery

Academics

Academic excellence is at the center of everything we do at City River. Our approach to learning is grounded in helping students deeply understand the material they study. Students engage with ideas through exploration, questions, and discovery. In a math class, that means understanding why a formula works, not just how to use it. In a history class, it means reading original documents and building arguments, not memorizing dates. Students explain their thinking, test their ideas, and refine their understanding as they go deeper into the work.

Arts

All City River students study the arts. This is not a program only for students who already identify as artists. It is a commitment to the idea that making things with intention, using your head, heart, and hands, is a skill every person benefits from developing.

At City River, art means painting and drawing. It also means theater, woodworking, and poetry. Developing creative skills and your identity as a person who moves, learns, and creates is a core piece of a City River education.

Physical Vitality & Discipline

Movement

At City River, every student moves every day. This is not a program designed only for athletes. It is a schoolwide commitment to the idea that regular physical activity is an important part of a healthy, balanced life.

For some students, movement means practicing with a team or competing in sports. For others, it means dance, fitness classes, strength training, or outdoor activity. No matter a student’s interests, movement is part of daily life at City River.

High school is a formative time, and the habits students build here often stay with them long after graduation. Our goal is to help students develop a lifelong relationship with movement by making it a normal, expected, and enjoyable part of each day.

Communication & Global Perspective

Language

At City River, we believe that honoring and understanding different cultures is essential to preparing students for a connected and inclusive world. Families choose our school because we celebrate the unique identities of our students and recognize the power of language in shaping how we see ourselves and others.

Our requirement that all students take at least three years of Spanish reflects these values. Learning another language expands students’ awareness of cultures and communities beyond their own, while also strengthening their grasp of language itself.
